Dr. Karla Johanning, CEO & Co-Founder of KJ Scientific, LLC, attended the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) North America 40th Annual Meeting in Toronto. Internationally, SETAC addresses research and study of environmental issues and management and regulation of natural resources.
Karla co-chaired “Advances in Contaminant Bioaccumulation” with colleagues Lawrence Burkhard, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Michelle Embry from the Health and Environmental Sciences Institute. Eight presentations addressed biotransformation, bioconcentration and biomagnification impacts from chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
Dr. Johanning also provided 3 poster presentations. The first poster was entitled, “Biotransformation of chemicals in different species using in vitro metabolism approaches.” The second poster explained “Cannabinoid Biotransformation Discoveries: Towards on understanding of cannabinoids (CBD) biotransformation in fish using in vitro technologies.” She co-presented the third “Analyzing complex mixtures for bioaccumulation potential using the trout in vitro metabolism assay (OECD TG 319A & B): a case study, Fir (Pine) oil” with Aurelia Lapczynski, Research Institute for Fragrance Materials Inc. Two posters shown below:
Karla joined in the Women in SETAC Luncheon. It featured guest speaker Imogen R. Coe, a research scientist at Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario. She is internationally known as a Canadian thought leader in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). She spoke about “Embracing Dimensions: How Uncomfortable Truths Can Lead Inclusive Excellence in Science.”
Karla networked with her fellow researchers and also made some new friends and collaborators!
Karla also met informally with student members of SETAC. She, Marco Franco of Baylor University and others checked in and assisted with their presentations. The students invited Karla to further help with their research skills and networking. As a result she attended the March 9-11, 2020 9th SETAC Young Environmental Scientists (YES) Virtual Meeting at Baylor University in Waco Texas.
